West Brom 0-0 Manchester City: League leaders lose advantage over United at the top after failing to break down hosts

Manchester City were unable to score in a Premier League game for the first time this season as West Bromwich Albion held the leaders to a goalless draw.

The first-half saw David Silva miss a chance that could very well have been the winner, while Shane Long could not convert a second-half header that would have seen his side close in on a famous victory.

The pattern of the game was evident within the first 10 minutes, as it was Mancini's men who were on the attack while the Baggies defended deep. In one such instance, a cross from Gael Clichy found Milner unmarked, but the midfielder headed wide of the target.

The first genuine effort on goal came after 17 minutes, when Paul Scharner's right-footed shot produced a save from Hart. From the resulting corner, a series of blocked shots followed by another corner. But the score line eventually remained goalless as the set play did not trouble the defence.

Ten minutes into the second half Balotelli appeared to be sending in a cross, but decided to go for glory instead. His curling shot caught goalkeeper Ben Foster off his line and almost caused a sensational goal, but the crossbar saved West Brom from trailing.

At the other end, an overhit cross saw Vincent Kompany taking no chances, heading the ball away to safety. But an error from Toure meant eventually saw Thomas sending in a superb cross that Long should have converted. But the forward's header somhow managed to miss the target, despite the former Reading man having more than enough space at the back post.

A little past the hour mark, Milner headed a cross into the box for Aguero to do the damage, but a vital tackle from Gareth McAuley saved the day with a superb challenge for the hosts as Nicky Shorey might have been left feeling he should have been quicker, which would have avoided putting his team in a desperate position in defence.

The visitors had scored in every Premier League game prior to this one, and gave it everything they had during the final few minutes to ensure that the game would not end goalless. But the Baggies defended well and managed to stave off the attacks and ensure that the league leaders dropped a point at the Hawthorns, and add their name to a list of three other clubs - Fulham, Liverpool and Chelsea - who have prevented City from taking three points this season.

City and Manchester United are now level on points, with Mancini's men retaining the top spot in the Premier League by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Roberto Mancini disappointed as Manchester City fail to score for first time this season in West Brom stalemate

Baggies' continued their recent run of form with a goalless draw against the league leaders at the Hawthorns, whilst the Italian raised concerns about January's fixture schedule

The Italian boss was left frustrated as his side dominated possession throughout but a determined display from Roy Hodgson’s men held the league leaders to a goalless draw at the Hawthorns.

“It’s impossible to win, we tried,” Mancini told reporters.

“It was difficult because West Brom played with everyone behind the ball, we couldn’t find a solution and we needed to score quickly in the second-half.”

The former Inter manager noted that whilst the Baggies decision to play with a number of men behind the ball caused City problems, his side should have taken advantage in the first half.

“Yes, it was the same at Stoke and today was the same," he continued.

“For this we need to improve in this situation, for when they get men behind the ball we need to improve. Maybe in the first-half we were to slow, but we had a chance and if we had scored the game would have changed.

“I said to the guys before the game if we don’t score in the first-half because I watched West Brom against Tottenham and they were very good. They lost the game 3-1 but they played very, very well.”

City have seen their five point lead at the top of the Premier League cut to just a goal difference advantage in recent weeks, and Mancini has raised concerns about his club's fixture schedule in comparison with other clubs challenging near the top of the table.

“I’m disappointed because we play January 1 then January 3 but Liverpool play December 29 and then January 3 against us," he said. "I think that this moment is not right, not good.

“I’m not happy, I don’t know why there is this situation. We know if we want to win the title and fight against United, because they are a strong team and to stay in the top four a long time we are strong enough to do this.”

The Eastlands outfit face a packed schedule throughout January, with the league game against Liverpool followed by the FA Cup third-round tie with Manchester United, as well a two-legged League Cup semi-final clash against Kenny Dalglish's side.

Despite the prospect of seven games in 25 days next month, Mancini is confident it will not affect his side's league hopes come the end of the season, even if they do temporarily slip into second.

“I think United will win their next game and for us it will be difficult as we play away at Sunderland and that will be difficult to play Liverpool after just 48 hours," he said.

“I’m confident that we can do a good job in the end. We play a lot of games in January and we could slip into second position but it is important to stay at the top at the end.”

Real Madrid's Mesut Ozil: Jose Mourinho is like a father to me

Continuing on his return to Turkey, the star covered numerous bases in a television interview, which also included him discussing his heritage, his hunger to win and El Clasico

Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil has revealed that coach Jose Mourinho has flourished into a father figure in his footballing career.
Speaking in an interview with NTVSpor on Sunday, the 23-year-old professed that he looks up to the former Chelsea and Inter boss in a paternal manner.

"Mourinho is [like] a father to me," said Ozil. "He is a great teacher, a strong character and a caring coach to all of his players."

Ozil's decision to pledge his international allegiance to Germany angered many Turkish supporters.

However, he openly admits that he has greatly enjoyed his experience in going back to revisit his motherland, while adding he possesses strong friendships with other Turkish footballers.

"I have good relationships with Turkish team-mates Arda Turan, Hamit Altintop and Nuri Sahin," he continued. "I knew Hamit from my Schalke days. He's like a elder brother.

"I had great days in Turkey. Seeing my relatives and friends was great."

Ozil also confessed that he was not comfortable with facing Turkey in the Euro 2012 qualifiers earlier this year, and that in an ideal world, both teams would progress into the finals of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

"I didn't want a match in Euro 2012 qualification with Turkey," he admitted. "My wish was both teams featuring in the Euro 2012 finals."

The attacking midfielder then concluded by discussing his aspirations for next year, which include lifting trophies for both club and country, while dismissing the Clasico defeat to Barcelona a fortnight ago.

"I want to win trophies with both Germany and Real Madrid in 2012," said Ozil.

"[The] bad result against Barcelona came as a result of bad luck, but we are leaders in La Liga now, and we are three points clear."

'They are very strong physically' - Barcelona's Pedro insists Real Madrid remain a difficult opponent

The attacker has refused to dismiss the threat posed by his side's arch-rivals, despite their Clasico failures, before reflecting on his chances of representing Spain at Euro 2012

Barcelona forward Pedro has highlighted physicality as arguably Real Madrid's most dangerous trait.

The 24-year-old told AS on Monday that Jose Mourinho's men should not be underestimated, regardless of their continued struggles against his team, as a potential meeting in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals between the giants could be on the cards.

"Yes, it is possible to cross with Real Madrid, but let's go step-by-step," said Pedro. "They are very strong physically, they are a tough opponent."

Barca demolished Segunda Division B side L'Hospitalet 9-0 in the third round of the tournament, but despite his joy at the result, Pedro proceeded to call for focus on their upcoming last-16 tie with Osasuna.

"I'm happy about the last game, but you have to think about the next, which will also be complicated," continued the Spain international.

"We know that the road is long and difficult, but we can do it calmly."

Pedro also discussed his chances of success for Spain, with whom he won the World Cup with in 2010. Now he wants to taste further glory by earning a place in Vicente del Bosque's 23-man squad for next summer's European Championship.

"Hopefully I can go to the Euros," commented Pedro. "The group [Spain have been given] is quite complicated and it will surely be a tough tournament, but it is too early to know if I will go.

"Fingers crossed I can, though, because it could give me the special pleasure of winning that title - the only one that I'm missing."

Sir Alex Ferguson plays down Manchester United transfer talk: I'm perfectly happy with the strength of our squad

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of top names in the lead up to the January transfer window but the Scot has indicated that he doesn't feel the need to make changes

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that he is happy with his squad and therefore won't make moves in the January transfer window unless a top player becomes available or if his already decimated roster is hit by further injuries.

The Red Devils boss has already dampened expectations of a splurge in the New Year and has claimed that he won't be swayed into changing his stance despite seeing a number of major casualties to his squad.

The Premier League champions have seen their midfield options drastically reduced in recent weeks, with Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher and Anderson all sidelined, while captain Nemanja Vidic is out for the season with knee ligament damage.

Despite the long injury list, Sir Alex is confident in his current options ahead of the Boxing Day clash with Wigan and told the club's matchday program: "All things being equal I am perfectly happy with the strength of our squad in terms of depth, quality and age range.
"I will not be swayed by the endless tweets and blogs urging the club to get busy in the transfer market next month.

"As far as I am concerned I am marching perfectly in step, true to my beliefs and principles. While recruiting some of the world's leading players can lift you into contention for honours, it doesn't necessarily take you all the way, as I hope we will be able to demonstrate before the end of the season as other factors come into play.

"You can never say never in football, of course, because fortunes can fluctuate wildly - that's the football world. If a really top-class player became available, then we would go for him, or if we picked up any further serious injuries, it might be important to add to our squad."

The Old Trafford outfit currently lies two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and is five points better off this season having played 17 games than it was 12 months ago.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo outscores Barcelona's Lionel Messi in 2011 - but the Argentine has the last laugh with five trophies to one

Barcelona versus Real Madrid is arguably football's greatest rivalry, but within the fascinating duel of Spain's superpowers there is an individual battle between two tremendous talents: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

They could not be more different. While the Argentine is an old-fashioned, street-style footballer who evokes a bygone era with his dazzling dribbles and mesmerising magic on the ball, the Portuguese is the complete modern player - all pace, power, precision and potency.

Messi and Ronaldo will go head to head - along with Xavi - for the FIFA Ballon d'Or in January and while the Argentine is expected to triumph in Zurich, 2011 has been a brilliant year for both players. Individually, Cristiano has the edge over the last 12 months, having netted an incredible 60 goals in 60 games, although collectively, Messi can claim the bragging rights, having led his brilliant Barcelona side to five more trophies under Pep Guardiola - La Liga, the Champions League, the Spanish Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Ronaldo recently broke the record for the number of league goals in a calendar year. The former Manchester United man has netted 43 times in La Liga in 2011, surpassing Messi's mark of 42 goals set in 2010. And those 43 strikes have come in just 34 games, 27 of which were part of last season's record-breaking total of 40, which set a new Pichichi record in Spain's top flight. But that may yet be beaten this term as Cristiano has already scored 20 in just 16 league games for Jose Mourinho's side in 2010-11.

Ronaldo is often accused of failing to produce against bigger teams, however, and that point was raised recently as the 26-year-old disappointed in the 3-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona. These stats appear to back up the claim, too, because Cristiano is less prolific against top-class opposition in the Champions League than in La Liga, where standards drop outside the top four or five sides.

For Portugal, the forward enjoyed a happy year in front of goal, scoring seven in nine games, but apart from the winner in a 2-1 success over Messi's Argentina, the other strikes came against lesser lights such as Cyprus, Luxembourg, Denmark and Bosnia.

And although he has shown a more generous side to his game of late, his total of 17 assists is still some way short of Messi's 28.

Madrid is getting closer to Barca, though, and much of that is down to Ronaldo. At his brilliant best, he may just inspire it to even greater things in 2012.

At the moment, however, Messi is still the main man. His international stats may be less impressive, but overall his numbers are very similar to those of Ronaldo. He has more assists than his rival, struck just a goal less than the Portuguese in 2011 - albeit in more games - and offers so much to a Barca side in which he is the undoubted star.

Messi may have hit 12 goals less than Cristiano in the calendar year, but his superior strike rate both in the cups and the Champions League proves he can perform against any adversaries. Indeed, in key games such as the Champions League semifinal and final, the Argentine delivered.

He falls down only internationally, hampered by a system which fails to get the best from his astonishing abilities. That remains a concern for Argentina as the South Americans look to take advantage of possessing the world's finest footballer in their ranks.

No wonder, then, they have tried to copy Barcelona's formation in the past, attempting to replicate a system in which Guardiola moved Messi further forward, playing him inside, supported by Xavi and Andres Iniesta behind him. It's a frightening prospect for any side, and one which has led Barca to 13 trophies under its current coach - including five in the past 12 months. But as Pep always says: they couldn't have done it without Messi.

So even though Cristiano outscored Leo in 2011, it's the Argentine who ends the year on top because of his ability to perform on the grandest of stages - and the silverware he has claimed in the process.

But as their clubs commence battle again in the New Year and their own personal duel continues, it remains to be see who will come out on top in 2012.
