Philadelphia removes Carlos Valdes' loan tag and make move permanent

Gutsy defender has been a big reason for club's turnaround this season.

The Philadelphia Union announced on Friday that it had made Carlos Valdes one of its permanent players after a deal was arranged with his parent club Independiente Santa Fe. The club also confirmed that forward Carlos Ruiz has been transferred to Veracruz.

Joining the Union this offseason, Valdes, 26, has made 20 appearances for Peter Nowak's side and has impressed mightily in the team's push to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Capped four times by the Colombian national team, Valdes can now focus on settling even further with the club and in the Philadelphia area.

Up next for the Union is the Houston Dynamo on Saturday as the sides battle for positioning in a very tight Eastern Conference table.
